As Vince returns from Amistad I am sure he will have many emotions to sort out. He hung in there with 70 of the finest fishermen in the world. Stay tuned for an update soon from Vince. (written by www.bassgrabbers.com webmaster)
Ok, I'm gonna try this again. Michelle and Kimberly have got me going. Now read at your own risk. I am the king of run-on sentences and when I get to hacking away at the computor it just gets worse. Ok here we go. I just completed my first Elite Tourney at Amistad. The adventure actually started two weeks before, when my boat was finally released from the Skeeter factory. Dru and I picked her up on Monday, H&H Marine did the set-up on tues., Wed. I took her too Muskogee to the Jamison Wrap and design. I picked it up on Friday and headed to Toledo Bend in Many La. for a B.A.S.S. Open, and proceded to break her in there. I finished up the tourney on Sat. jumped in the truck and drove all night (Waltzed) across Texas. That state is two big. I arrived in Del Rio at 4:49 a.m. as I was greeted by th Del Rio PD. and Officer Barney Fife. It took him 15 min. to sneak up on my truck with all his little lights twinkling and hand on gun. He then asked where I was going? Wow, I kinda glanced back at the boat and said to the lake, I was being nice. He asked for my autograph which I signed on the speeding citation. So I then proceeded to the Lake and Holiday Camping park where I was invited to stay with Mike Mundy and Randy Mounce two great guys, and there was a treat for me there. They have started a new program called "Reel Thanx" where they take wounded veterans fishing for a couple of days, wow what an honor to get to hang out with our nations finest for an evening. All Six of these young men were special forces warriors and very impessive to be around and when they loosened up and started telling stories I was in awe of what I was hearing, I'm pretty sure they could all kick Rambo's but and thats no bull. Monday a.m. first day of practice, I said goodbye to the soilders and left for a ramp up the Rio Grande river, an area that I had never fished before, caught a lot of small fish but nothing great. Weather was fantastic 80 with the wind out of the south at 10-15mph. tues. a.m I decided to go north to an area I was familiar with an Knew would be able to navigate when the weather turned nasty on Thursday. i caught a lot of small fish but when the wind layed down briefly could see some large fish down 25 feet deep on a ledge and thought I might be able to catch them. Wed. practice is cut short due to the meetings and hooking up with our Marshals (person in back of our boats). I worked areas close to the ramp to try something different and the Front finally moved in around 2:00 p.m. wow what fun running the lake in 7 foot waves and even more fun loading the boat with the waves crashing into the ramp. As I was idling up to the trailor it would completely vanish then the waves would retreat and I could see the entire trailor with no water, a one shot deal luckily I timed it right and didn't put the boat in the back of the pick-up. Every inch of me and my boat was wet rain suits work on rain and not waves going over your head. Thursday a.m. my first launch as an Elite Angler, I believe I would have been nervous about the experience if I wasn't thinking about the 6 foot waves outside the cove we were going to have to run through during take-off. I got to my first area and worked it as slow as I could in the wind and 34 degree temp's. the water temp had dropped about 5 degrees and I had my limit by 11:30 about 9 pounds worth. I went to the ledge where I had seen the big fish and chuncked a carolina rigged Lizard on top of it, the rig had barely hit bottom when the big fish almost took the rod out of my hands, she surfaced and shook her head, I would have swore she would weigh 9 or 10lbs, but she had spawned out and only weighed 5.3 but that was a huge help, I missed a couple of bites and then caught a 2 pounder which helped me cull a smaller fish and gave me a little over 13 pounds. I fished hard the rest of the day but was un-able to up-grade and ended my first day in 49th place. Friday the wind was laying down a little but temps were around 33 at take-off and I decided to run the same pattern. I had a limit around 9:30 and caught fish all day long, just no size with the exception of two large Stripers. No help there. I ended up with 9.14 and finished in 70th place. Looking back at it I would have gone up the Rio grande on Friday and followed my gut instinct, since that was where most of the larger stringers were caught. Live and learn, I'm just ready to fish som muddier water, that 25 foot of visibility sucks. I don't even take a bath in that clear of water. Well I'm off to Arkansas then Alabama and fish a couple of river systems where i should be more comfortable since I am a river Rat. "Here Fishy, Fishy, fishy"
Hey Its me again. Just Finishing the Dardanelle Diamond Drive Tournament. Here in Russelville Arkansas. The Events started Sunday for myself and 8 other pro's as we visited with some of the kids in the Arkansas Childrens Hospital. The kids were great, I had taken some t-shirts to give the kids which was a great idea however I turned my back for a second and Kevin VanDam and Kelly Jordan had given all of them away.
Getting ready to load up and head for Alabama. I'll give the re-cap on Dardanelle later. Stay tuned. Here, Fishy, Fishy, fishy....
